SPRING 2009 WORKSHOPS
Beginner Sword: Saturday, April 25th 12:30-2:30
Have you ever wondered how dancers balance a sword on their head and execute moves that seem to defy gravity? Have you wanted to try it? Now is your chance! In this technique class you will learn the basics of dancing with the most dangerous prop, the sword. You will learn how to balance the sword, how to dance with it, tips and tricks when dancing with this prop, and lastly you will learn how to care for the sword. Participants need to bring their own sword made specifically for dancing (see links below), as well as a non-slippery scarf to wrap around their head (cotton works well), and lastly a small hand towel.

Basics of Choreography: Sunday, April 26th 1:00-3:00
Have you ever wanted to choreograph your own solo but don't know where to begin? Have you tried to choreograph a piece and got stuck in the middle-or beginning-or end? Have you choreographed a piece and felt like it just didn't connect with the music (or audience?!) This workshop is for you! This lecture-based class will teach the basics of choreography such as what type of music and dance is appropriate for an audience, a discussion on basic rhythms and instruments, how to break down a song into sections and to translate the music into movement. The student will leave with a solid understanding of how to choreograph a solo to a basic song. If the student wants to take part 2 of the Choreography series, they will leave with an assignment of choosing a song to map out and start to choreograph for part 2.

Bollywood Choreography with Veil: Saturday, May 2nd 1:00-3:00
Do you want to learn some of the moves that you saw in the Oscar Winning movie Slumdog Millionaire? Do you want to expand your knowledge of the famous Bollywood style of dancing that is synonymous with India's award-winning film industry? This workshop will teach a complete choreography utilizing Bollywood dance moves, facial expressions, and hand movements that have made this type of dance an icon in both the film industry and the belly dance world.
$30 Open to all levels.
Costume Swap: Saturday, May 9th 1:00-4:00
Looking for a deal on costumes, hip scarves, CDs, DVDs or other dance necessities? Do you have a costume you want to sell or trade off? Do you need costuming tips or advice on alterations? This is your chance! The studio will be open to any and all who are looking to do a little costume swapping. Please RSVP for table. Space per vendor will depend on total number of vendors. All sales / trades are between vendor / purchaser. Amarain Belly Dance / Yoga and Friends simply are supplying facility and promotion.

Sword Choreography: Saturday, May 16th 12:30-2:30
Learn a dramatic tribal fusion sword dance in this fun workshop that includes some basic technique and a full choreography. This is a dramatic song so bring some attitude. Dancers will need to bring a scarf to tie around their head, a small hand towel and knee pads. There will be some floor work but alternative steps will be offered if you do not want to get on the floor.

Coreography, Beyond Basics: Saturday, May 16th 12:30-2:30
For those dancers who have a basic understanding of choreography and want to take it to the next level, this class is for you. This workshop is a combination of lecture and movement, and will help the student continue their knowledge of choreography theory. The concepts covered in Basics of Choreography will be expanded upon in this class, and the student will begin applying the concepts to an actual song that they would like to dance to. This class will cover such topics as instrument recognition, rhythm changes, song mapping, and improvisation as a safety net. Please bring two choices of songs that you would like to choreograph to.
